Moyne Villa reached the semi final of the cup with this hard fought result against a strong Athenry side.

Villa started well and had an early chance to go ahead through Sophie Heneghan who dragged her shot wide. Moments later a great through ball by Elizabeth Busari sent Rebecca Hastings free in on goal but she also shot wide. Villa were creating the better chances and any counter attack was being dealt with well by Niamh O’Brien, Mischa Roche, Saibh Malcolm and Amy Curran. Villa continued to threaten the Athenry goal. The goal did come eventually when some good work by Erin O’Connor freed Rebecca Hastings who shot strongly past the keeper. 1-0 Villa.

The lead didn’t last though, when a mix up at the back allowed the Athenry striker an easy finish from 6 yards out. Villa did respond though and several chances were created before eventually Leah Hicks was sprung by Rebecca Hastings and she chipped the oncoming keeper. 2-1 Villa at half time.

The second half began much like the first with Villa having the better chances, but the shots were either wide or straight at the keeper. It was becoming very scrappy now with both teams giving frees and possession away very easily. Villa again had chances to get the third but to no avail. As the game drew to a close Athenry began to leave more and more players up, causing trouble for the Villa defense. Kara O’Connor remained strong and smothered a bobbling ball well to relieve the pressure. Full time saw the hosts move into the semis after a well deserved win.
